Aplastic Anemia and Myelodysplastic Syndromes [MDS] are extremely rare, yet serious disorders that affect the bone marrow and blood. In both conditions the stem cells in the bone marrow that produce red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets are affected. This leads to severe underproduction of at least two of these blood cell types. Reduced number of RBCs lead to anemia and heart failure. Too few white cells lowers immunity making the person susceptible to infections. Low platelet count causes spontaneous internal bleeding. All of these conditions can turn life threatening.

Anorexia is an eating disorder characterized by an intense fear of gaining weight which causes the individual to avoid eating to the point of self-starvation. However, even after treatment, the impact of the disorder can complicate one's life. While most of the damage done can be corrected with medical intervention and a healthy diet, in some cases the impact lasts longer. Women can have trouble conceiving or complications throughout their pregnancy. Likewise, extreme anorexia will weaken the heart muscle and even after the person has overcome anorexia the heart may still be susceptible to heart disease. Likewise neurological disorders and skeletal issues are also long term effects of anorexia.

When external temperature goes low, in a bid to conserve body heat, blood flow to body parts farthest from the heart is reduced. Hence the blood vessels in the fingers and toes get constricted. In those with Raynaud's Disease, the arteries in the extremities shrink way more than necessary causing finger and toes to go white and then blue from complete lack of oxygen. This episode lasts about 15 minutes and when the body warms up, fingers and toes get tingly and turn bright red before becoming normal. Raynaud's Disease is not a serious condition but if left untreated it can cause considerable tissue damage. The best way to stay safe is to wear at least two layers of gloves and socks in cold conditions, to stay warm.

Children may need braces for a number of reasons including crooked teeth, overlapping teeth, protruding teeth or uneven alignment. Why do these problems occur? In most cases they're inherited, in some it could be due to thumb sucking or sucking on the lower lip or even due to injury. MYTH #6: No family history of cancer means the person will not get cancer.

A structural defect in the heart that occurs while the baby is still in the womb is called a congenital heart defect. It happens when the heart of baby is developing and the mother remains unaware of this. The cause can be genetic or due to certain drugs taken during pregnancy or by certain infections during pregnancy. One cannot say for sure and in fact, in most cases the cause is unknown. A thorough check-up of the new born and routine check-ups there after will help identify heart defects. While some heart defects will not have much of an impact on the child and he/she can lead a normal life, there are a few severe defects that may need long-term treatment. Either way, the earlier the problem it diagnosed, the more successful the treatment.

The macula is a part of the retina that has highly light-sensitive cells. The macula plays an important part in helping us see details. Damage to the macular impacts the center of vision, making it harder to see clearly. This is called Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD) because it is more common amongst the elderly. There is no known cause for AMD but risk factors include:

- being aged 60 and above

- having a family history of AMD

This bacterial infection is caused by contaminated food. Infection in a pregnant woman can be fatal to the baby.

ZIKA VIRUS

A bite from an infected Aedes mosquito transmits the Zika Virus. If passed on from pregnant mom to the baby it can cause a congenital disability called microcephaly and other severe brain defects.

How it's done:

When there's no restroom in sight but you need to urinate, you have to hold it in by squeezing your muscles. Do this same thing even when you do not have the urge. Squeeze the pelvic muscles tight and hold for ten seconds. Release, relax and repeat. Do ten sets, thrice a day. You can do this while sitting, standing or lying down. A slightly advanced version is to lie down on your back, draw your knees up, lift your pelvis and then contract the muscles. If you have any back or hip issues, consult with your doctor before doing the same.
