Skin cancer begins in the epidermis and can occur anywhere on the body, but it is most common in that is often exposed to sunlight, such as the face, neck, hands, and arms.
The different types of cancer that starts in the skin and its treatment:
Nonmelanoma skin cancers are most common types of skin cancer and rarely spread to other parts of the body. They are two types:
Basal Cell Carcinoma
Squamous Cell Carcinoma
Actinic keratosis is a skin condition that sometimes becomes squamous cell carcinoma.
The change in skin color and being exposed to sunlight can increase the risk of nonmelanoma skin cancer and actinic keratosis. The physician checks the skin for bumps or spots that look abnormal in colour, size, shape, or texture. All or part of the abnormal-looking growth is cut from the skin by biopsy technique and viewed under a microscope by a pathologist to check for signs of cancer. If the diagnosis is confirmed, it is treated by surgical excision or radiotheraphy.
Melanoma is a disease in which malignant cells form in the melanocytes. It is a much rarer type of skin cancer and more aggressive in possessing a great threat. And it is more likely to invade nearby tissues and spread to other parts of the body.
All melanomas are treated by surgical excision. The tumour is assessed under the microscope and the next step will depend on the Breslow thickness. If the diagnosis confirmed, the thickness is greater than 1mm, biopsy of lymph gland is required. If there is a presence of melanoma in glands, further surgery is required and the sample of tissue may also be tested for certain gene changes. If the melanoma is diagnosed and treated early, the chance of cosmetic disfigurement and the chance of reoccurrence or spread is less.
