About Pain Management

Pain is an uncomfortable feeling that tells you something may be wrong. It can be steady, throbbing, stabbing, aching, pinching, or described in many other ways. Sometimes, its just a nuisance, like a mild headache. Other times it can be debilitating. Pain can bring about other physical symptoms, like nausea, dizziness, weakness or drowsiness. It can cause emotional effects like anger, depression, mood swings or irritability. Perhaps most significantly, it can change your lifestyle and impact your job, relationships and independence.

Pain is classified as either acute or chronic. Acute pain is usually severe and short-lived and is often a signal that your body has been injured. Chronic pain can range from mild to severe, is present for long periods of time, and is often the result of a disease that may require ongoing treatment. Currently, the best way to treat the pain is to manage the symptoms. If the source of your pain cant be treated, or isnt known, our pain medicine specialists can offer options for pain control.

Our Pain Clinic is responsible for the care or treatment of acute pain (which recently came on) but also for the treatment of chronic pain (of less recent date). Pain that persists for a long time is less acute but is psychologically more difficult to treat. The causes of the pain can vary: postoperative pain, post-traumatic pain or spontaneous pain. Our clinic specializes in identifying the causes of pain by working with various specialists and treating various pain syndromes. Priority specializations include treatment of longstanding back pain, muscle pain and joint pain. Our pain consultant will help to manage the medication and increase physical function of patients. The service focusses on self management and improvement of quality of life by helping manage mood, reduce distress and increase function. Our aim is not only to reduce the burden of pain but to improve self-management, encourage mobility and reduce the negative psychological impact of pain. It is often not possible to cure long term pain but, with help, patients can return to a higher quality of life despite the pain. The intention is to provide patients with education, support and skills to manage their pain effectively and to make sure that they fully understand their condition. The patient may make an appointment himself directly or be referred through another physician (family doctor, neurologist, surgeon, etc.). our experts are capable to deal with various types of pain, either in whole or in part. If medical examinations have already been carried out in other institutions it is important that patients bring any of these results with them to the first appointment
