Role & responsibilities of CRITICAL CARE CONSULTANT The Chief Critical care consultant In the Intensive Care Unit is responsible for providing the highest standard of critical care and expertise to patients admitted in the ICU and High dependency units of the hospital. Organization Relationships : Responsible to: Medical Director/Chairman Immediate reporting to: Medical Superintendent Responsible for: Overall care of ICU Patients Coordinates with: Medical, Nursing, and administrative staff, patients, and families. Duties and responsibilities : Clinical Management : Chief Critical Care Consultant is responsible For formulation and implementation of protocols and standard practice guidelines to be followed in the intensive care unit. For the overall care of the patient which includes a comprehensive initial assessment, in depth evaluation, interpretation of the clinical findings and test results, arriving at the most appropriate diagnosis, treatment, and re-assessment and follow- up To pay daily rounds to the patients in ICU and referred patients. For referring the patient to other consultants/specialist when necessary, with personal communication. To provide a conflict free environment by collaborating well with the primary consultant, other specialists, referral doctors and other department HODs. To ensure appropriate documentation and completion of all medical records and updates on the progress of the patient. For reviewing and countersigning the entries and documentation of all Junior medical doctors in case of patients under his care. For implementing all the infection control practices formulated and approved by the Hospital infection control committee such that infection rates are brought to the barest minimum level possible. For performing diagnostic and therapeutic procedures for which the critical care consultant is privileged for. For supervising and coordinating the activities of other intensivists, residents, duty doctors ,nurses, therapists, and other medical staff in critical patient care. Is responsible for identifying and bringing all the medico legal cases to the notice of management on time in accordance with the hospital policy. Is required to attend the Code Blue of the Hospital, whenever applicable. Quality Improvement Program : Chief Critical Care Consultant Is expected to contribute to development of policies and procedures for continuous quality improvement program of ICU. should maintain department statistics and perform regular audits and quality assurance programmes for the ICU Is required to actively participate and contribute to Hospital Committees such as Hospital Infection Control committee, Clinical Audit Committee, CPR committee, Drugs and Therapeutic committee. Is required to actively participate in Hospital accreditation process. Administration : Chief Critical care Consultant Should interact with the hospital management to ensure that the ICU is staffed with adequate number of appropriately qualified staff, including other intensivists, junior medical officers, nurses, and other paramedical staff. Should co-ordinate with other departments in the hospital to ensure that their services are delivered to the ICU in an efficient and timely manner, whenever required. Must play a key role in the maintenance and upgradation of the ICU, including the physical structure and equipment in the intensive care unit. Academics & Research : Chief critical care consultant Is required to participate in the academic, research and teaching activities of the hospital and must work towards introducing post graduate training program in critical care. Is also required to participate in the Continuous Medical Education program. Is also required to participate in the Continuous Nursing training program. End of Life Decision : Chief Critical Care Consultant should recognise that intensive care may be futile in certain situations, and initiate end-of life discussion with the family, in co-ordination with the primary consultant in such situations. should identify brain dead patients and coordinate with the management and transplant team regarding organ donation.
